Less than one half an hour after starting to run, staggering on the bitumen, it lengthens to sleep fortwenty minutes. The day is announced a long one !In spite of the first reliefs from Dakar, which make us climb between the hills to 250 meters of altitude, heat remains suffocating and, in an atmosphere saturated with light, the landscapes and sun remain wrapped in an opaque veil. The layout of TransAfrica is neither road today any more, nor track, but a new hybrid version, actually an old track in full building site of levelling on which builds section by section the new principal road axis connecting Dakar to Bamako, financed by the FED, Fonds Européen de Dévelopment. Within one year or two, a highway for trucks and possible joggers, but for the moment a universe of dust populated of Caterpillars…In this hell each more pitiless day, Serge decide to run two half-stages today, to take cover from the hottest hours. At midday, after 51 K, a provisional camp is installed in the shade of a baobab tree and the power generating unit started to activate the air-conditioner. Serge eats and lie down up to 5 PM, eats again and takes again the road at 6.30 PMfor three more hours while the Saviem truck runs ahead in order to go up the camp in edge of road. A few minutes only after his arrival, Serge lies down under his tent, announcing that it will set out again tomorrow morning at 4 AM. At the time when the moon rises, TransAfrica is tired and falls asleepin a few minutes. At general request, starting from today, we will present you Serge’s crew forTransAfrica. Today Ludovic, known as Ludo, or even Lulu (photo 4 above). As a physiotherapist in the city of Grenoble, Ludo is busy with Serge’s body for the third time, after doing the in 1999 during TransAustralia and 2001 During TransSouthAmerica. He ensures each day, at least 30 minutes of massage, sometimes more, until an hour. In the course of day, he generally shares with Laure the Toyota-leech. Tenant during the night of the tent fixed on the gallery of the Toyota. Distinguishing mark: do not love at all the small beasts, whatever they are (snakes, spiders, ear-wig, mosquitos, etc.) andproceeds daily before lying down with a radical disinfection of its housing.

D12 – 72.0Km Under these crushed sun latitudes, between running by day and running by night, it is as different as day and night… After a bad night, Serge takes a lift in the Toyota to go back 10 K before camp, at the precise point where it stopped yesterday.
