Photo Thomas BREGARDIS<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h4 class=\"h4-1\">D171 &#8211; 75.5Km<\/h4>\n<h5 class=\"h5-2\">TUESDAY, JUNE 6<br \/>N38 53.628 E100 41.832 (1526m) &#8211; N38 36.256 E101 20.377 (2017m)<br \/>75.5 km &#8211; 11H06&#8242;<\/h5>\n<div id=\"descin\">            What has happened to the 312?&nbsp; Yesterday we went through the city of Xanghye (which has the biggest sleeping Buddha in China) with it&#8217;s dust and traffic: vehicles of every sort that honk enough to give you a headache.&nbsp; Serge had to run about 10 kilometers to get out of that tiny, tiny city so we now have an idea of what big Chinese cities will be like.&nbsp; For example, Lanzhou, with its 2 million inhabitants, which Serge will cross from west to east along the Yellow River.<\/p>\n<p>Today Serge went through the town of Shandan at the 40th kilometer.&nbsp; Leaving the town he had two possible itineraries: the toll road or the highway, which we thought was the 312 because of the first marker we saw.&nbsp; But it wasn&#8217;t so we found ourselves first on a narrow road, then on a track and finally on the alternate road.&nbsp; We are in very rural China.&nbsp; As for Serge, he is lost without the markers which one finds on highway 312:&nbsp; &#8220;where are they leading me?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Great Wall of China, or what is left of it, is omnipresent on this stage.&nbsp; The part of the wall here was built between the XIV and XVI centuries and now there are only ruins.&nbsp; Our camp is set up opposite one of them.<\/p>\n<p>The weather continues to be rather dull and gray and this evening it&#8217;s cold.&nbsp; Because of the wind, the clouds and the altitude the temperature is 13\u00b0 Celsius.&nbsp; We were dressed in our heavy clothes for dinner.<\/p>\n<p>There was a departure and an arrival today: 2 French speaking Chinese guides are taking over since we are at the half way point on Chinese territory.&nbsp; R\u00e9my (French nickname) will leave us this afternoon and Antoine, who prefers that we call him Sum, has joined us.&nbsp; Good-byes are quick, just the time to thank R\u00e9my, a talented interpreter, discreet and efficient, who was able to adapt to the rhythm of this rather special life style.&nbsp; Thanks, R\u00e9my, who wants to say a few words:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Today, June 6, 2006, is the day I will return to Chengdu, the capital of the SiChuan province, where I live.&nbsp; I&#8217;m leaving the team of Mr. Serge, with whom I have worked and lived for 40 sun-filled days which started at the border post of the Irkestam Pass.&nbsp; It&#8217;s a fine, friendly, humorous and easy going team.&nbsp; I am taking with me many memories, which I will keep forever.&nbsp; Thanks to the whole team for its kindness, its support and above all it&#8217;s understanding of our work.&nbsp; I sincerely wish that Mr. Serge will successfully continue his Paris-Tokyo transcontinental crossing and the grand cause for his race.&nbsp; My best wishes to him for good health.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>R\u00e9my (Qing Guolin )<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">English translation by Lee Hecht<\/span><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>        <br class=\"clear\">      <\/div>\n<p id=\"closingbar\">THE INCREDIBLE SERGE GIRARD&#8217;S CHALLENGE<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Muraille de Chine construite sous la dinastie MING.
