Our camp is always very animated and some 20 children hover around our vehicles: they watch us, they laugh and the older children come talk to us, using the few English words they have learned. As usual, we are the first westerners with whom they are in direct contact and even the elders are curious and come to have a look. Serge is in heaven and after dinner he went for a walk down to the river. He admitted that he can’t imagine going home and living again in a house: “I won’t have enough oxygen, I love this life on the road, of a nomad and meeting the Chinese.” It’s true that here smiles and simplicity replace the stress of the race and material needs. We have such a need to possess more and more and to be smothered by worldly goods that we simply forget to live. These people are a reminder and it’s good for us!

English translation by Lee Hecht

THE INCREDIBLE SERGE GIRARD’S CHALLENGE

Vieux paysan.
