When he got up this morning, Serge was already making calculations: “exactly how many kilometers do I still have to run?”  He went to sleep doing his calculations and he got up doing his calculations — a real walking calculator.  The weather was humid but bearable.  Mist hid the sun’s rays and the breeze brought some cool air.  It was too good to be true.  The sun came out and with it came today’s difficulty:  a steep, twisting slope (59th kilometer at sea level – 64.4 km at 490 meters or an average of 7%).  Serge winced.  His teeth showed as his face twisted from the effort, all the muscles in his face were strained and his eyes were glued to the asphalt.<\/p>\n

From the top of the mountain the panorama of the sea was sumptuous and made us want to dive in.  “I had the time to admire the scenery because I was really going slowly.”  At the end of the stage a bit of humor doesn’t do any harm.<\/p>\n

This evening we are going along Cape Tappi.  Just across, Hokkaido Island melts into the mist and is invisible.  Blue hydrangea decorate the seaside and give a touch of color to the omnipresent greenery.  The houses here are not as opulent as those in other regions.  We feel like we are at the end of the earth.<\/p>\n
