The approach to Athens

Early this morning Serge passed the Isthmus of Corinth.   The canal, which cuts across the isthmus, is a slim trench more than 6 km long that was man made between 1881 and 1893. It seems awfully narrow but more than 12,500 boats go through it every year.
The sun is out and Serge slathers sunscreen on his face, for the first time since our departure.  The whole team looks good and it appears that the weather will be fine, at least until Sunday.  That’s good because tomorrow Serge is crossing the capital, a small city of 3 million souls, which is 1/3 of the Greek population.
René and I were able to cross the city from end to end and that won’t be the most complicated part!
The biggest difficulty will not be to find a place for 7 people to sleep but a place to park our big camper and the van.  It becomes an exercise in style, which gives us some problems and has us driving round and round for hours.  I even thought we would spend the night driving around!
Florent and Bertrand arrived this evening after many telephone calls, a lot of time spent on the Internet and a lot of stress.  But they are here and the trip went well.
It was a good day for the van and its occupants, Daniel and Thomas.  The road was easy until they reached Elefsina and then there were some changes of direction to find the road through the unattractive industrial area.  The scenery varied between the corniche of the seaside and villages, where Daniel and Thomas even bought half a roasted chicken because the smell was so tempting.  At the other end of the smell spectrum, there was the unpleasant odor of the Agii Theodori refineries for a few kilometers, as well as the entrance to Elefsina.  No, it really does not smell nice!
As for Serge, he continues on his way, more quickly than planned or maybe it’s because the kilometers are shorter!  Here we are at the gates of Athens and tomorrow Jean-Pascal and a few Athenian runners will come run part of the stage with Serge.  We should reach Marathon tomorrow evening and it promises to be a long day.
