This evening our software reveals that the contour of our route has been undulating and Serge realizes once more that Japan is not flat.
Km 0 – 371 m
Km 10 – 316 m
Km 18.5 – 775 m
Km 23 – 500 m
Km 38 – 1350 m
Km 42.5 – 1150 m
Km 43.5 – 1250 m
Km 58 – 516 m
Km 73.4 – 674 m
At the 9th kilometer, Serge suffered a light attack of hypoglycemia. Things became serious when we left route 19 to enter the mountains, at the 10th kilometer. Head lowered, face set, Serge continued alternating walking and running, as he has been doing for the last few days. Sticking to his rules is what saves him. He has less problem with his tendon. Serge is now changing his running shoes every 2 to 3 days, which helps optimize the cushioning, because his flatter step is no doubt heavier now than it was before.
The scenery continues to be stunning, the gray sky and a shaded route have given us a bit of relief. Serge is wearing neither hat nor gloves and he doesn’t have to wet his head or apply sun block.
We see that Serge has reached 73 kilometers. No need asking why: it’s the average he wants to maintain. But will it be possible all the way to Tokyo? Nothing is less sure, especially because a typhoon is forecast for tonight or tomorrow!
