D105 – 76.2Km

SATURDAY, APRIL 1
N36 10.936 E58 52.991 (1238m – 10km after NEYSHABOUR) – N35 58.851 E59 35.833 (1278m – BAGHCHE)
76.2 km – 9H52′
One day is followed by another and each is different.  Serge had a great stage in spite of having to climb a 1540 meter col at kilometer 61. At the top, the vista was splendid.  Since this morning we have been surrounded by fields of wheat and orchards of peach, apple and cherry trees in bloom.  The region is also well know for its fields of saffron. Serge finished his day’s run with an alert stride and his head turning from left to right, which is so characteristic of moments of well being.  We will sleep at the home of a family where there are hens and roosters running around the courtyard.  It seems that in France the news programs have abandoned the subject of bird flu to concentrate on the crisis linked to the CPE (Contract Premier Employment) which is rocking the country.  We have the feeling we aren’t lacking anything essential …. We’re far from everything and rather disconnected!

An aside concerning our itinerary for the coming months: at the beginning of the week we will enter Turkmenistan and from there go through Uzbekistan and Kirghistan before entering  China.  China will be the largest country to cross and, unfortunately, we will not go through Tibet.  The zone called Aksay Chin, which is administratively controlled by the Chinese and claimed by India, is now under military control and bivouacking is not permitted.  It isn’t easy for our caravan to go unnoticed and we don’t want to take risks.  We will follow a road to the north of Kashgar that leads to Turpan.  This part will cause no particular problem.  In 2004 we came on a reconnaissance and know it is on the silk road. Therefore, the route that will lead us to Tokyo will be shorter than planned and Serge, who can only dream of a never ending race, imagines himself following his route to go around the world…… Watch this space.
