LAS VEGAS – RICHFIELD
Wednesday, August 13th : the hottest day. 51miles (82 kilometers)
We leave Las Vegas to ,find ourselves back in the desert, in the “valley of fire”. Every 3 minutes we jump out of “la sangsue” to give Serge some water , but a minute later his mouth is dry again . no shade anywhere for him to lie in , for his break.
For three days serge has wanted to stop too early , we must mast make him go on.
Thursday August 14th. 58.1 miles(93 kilometers)
Two states. Today we go through Nevada before reaching Utah . It’ s still as hot but the scenery is fantastic.
Friday, august 15th 45.7miles (73.5 kilometers)
Early start: 5am, 20 miles from St George. He runs across the town in the morning. First day in Utah, it’s also the first time we have changed time zone, we must put our watch an hour ahead. After having run 57.8miles (93 kilometres) the day before, Serge doesn’t feel in top shape. Tired of running on highways, Serge covers 45.3 miles (73 kilometres).
C’est le jour où Serge trouve Saturnin un petit canard en plastique qui deviendra le fétiche de la course.
On that day, Serge finds Saturnin, a little plastic duck which will become our mascot.
Sunday, august 17th 56.2 miles (90 kilometers)
From France, Christian (Dominique ‘s husband) has worked out how many miles a day have to be done to break the record. Hard job, especially since the 60 miles a day scheduled haven’t been achieved so far. Serge gets in a temper: he is too slow.
Monday, August 18th 59.7 miles (96 kilometres)
6.22 am. Serge starts off on the motorway but we leave it quichly to get on a country road cut through the rock. There is a stream and luxurious vegetation which give us a bit of freshness. It ‘s here that Serge reaches his 1000 kilometers. He avoids Richfield to finish the stage at Salina. (North of Richfield). He is on a high, it’s the first time he has managed to do 60 miles (96 km) since he started. He is thrilled.
