J335 – Thursday, September 16: Mailly le Camp – Troyes

77.07km  – 10H35’
Altitude : 95m
We leave Mailly Le Camp, a small town of 1,600 inhabitants, which houses a military camp of more than 700 soldiers (a training camp for the armed forces).  The soldiers wear their camouflage uniforms in town and in the shops.  It makes for a rather peculiar atmosphere and gives the impression that the whole town is a barracks into which we have been plunged like an invisible witness.

Far from such thoughts, Serge is putting on his socks as I watch.  Normally, after breakfast he gets ready in his corner.  It’s his private time, while I am at the vehicle with the rest of the team to fine tune the details of our itinerary.  But this morning I forgot to take out his socks and he comes out with his bag in hand, barefoot in his shoes.  So I am witness to the preparation of his feet, which is real sport, accompanied by sighs and scowls.
Today there is no more activity on the roads than yesterday.  The terrain is relatively flat and there is a wind that wears out our runner “this wind is killing me” he says at the finish.  His only words are “thank you, see you later” when René or Bertrand give him his food.  Not talkative, head down, that’s Serge today.
There are many fields of sugar beet and potatoes here.  We took a photo of a kind of reed we have not seen before.  If you know the name of this plant that often borders the roads in this part of France please let us know.
At 6:05 p.m. Serge arrives at the Aube Stadium, where the CJD team of Troyes is waiting.  Serge thinks that 76 km on the odometer is not enough so, as he did in Reims, he runs an extra lap in order to clock his daily minimum: 77 km.
Thanks go to the whole CJD team of the Troyes section for their warm welcome and hospitality.
Tomorrow we will continue on our road in the Aube department and we hope that the sunshine will follow.  Serge’s short prayer: “may the wind not change direction”.

Town : Troyes (Aube)
