J208 – Wednesday, May 12: Turba – Tallin

71.5km  –10H06’
Altitude : 2m

We are up early to get ready to cross the Baltic Sea.  We are scheduled to embark at  4:30 PM and it would be too easy for Serge to run only the 61.5 km to the terminal in Tallinn.

At 5:25 AM the alarm rings for a 6:15 departure.  Serge seems better; at least his knee seems better.  He makes good progress and 10km outside the center of the city the first buildings appear.  We have not had a beautiful, warm day since we arrived in Lithuania on May 1st and our last day in the Baltic countries leaves us reconciled to the gray, gloomy image we will keep of the past two weeks.

The historic center of Tallinn is a real jewel.  It is surrounded by ramparts, exactly as  the tourist brochures show it: the most medieval city in Northern Europe.  At 3:00 pm we park the vehicles at the terminal and Serge takes off alone on a short run.

Scandinavia is waiting for us on the other side.  In one day we will have been in two capitals!

This evening we have booked rooms in the student hostel of Helsinki, near the Olympic stadium.  Normal for a group of young people, no?
