Passage de Serge à Krilo

D35 – 70.2Km

SATURDAY, JANUARY 21
KASTEL (15 km before Split) – MAKARSKA
70.2 km – 10H15′
Day breaks at 7H00 and the sun sets at 17H15.  Serge left at 7H35 with a sunrise on the sea that was a beautiful sight.  We skirted the city of Split at about 9H00 and saw tall white buildings in the distance.  No doubt there is an old city which we won’t see.

Once again we are going along the sea.  We admired the beautiful sail boats in Krilo; the workmen were busy restoring their vivid colors for next summer.

Traffic is heavy on route N° 8 and the road has no shoulders.  We decided to take an alternate itinerary for 11 km.  It was a tiny road that went up and then became a path for the descent.  From the top the panorama was thrilling and we admired the tiny houses nestled on the mountain side.  At 13H00 clouds started gathering above the mountain ahead of us.  One hour later the sky had clouded over and it started to drizzle.  Serge had run a good part of the day in a light sweater and was grumbling about having to cover up but at 16H15 he was writhing in pain: he had a stomach ache.  He took shelter for five minutes in the four-wheel drive where the warmth did him good.  The pain gone he started again. It was the third time since the start that he has been surprised by the cold but being a bit stubborn he tends to wait to cover up, in spite of the fact that his followers suggest a jacket or a wind breaker.  Like it or not, he finished the last 7 km walking for 1H15.

Serge took a bath this evening (we’re not making a habit of this) which restored him.  He is tired and doesn’t have much appetite.  We have to nag at him but it does little good.

Many thanks to Eliane and René for today’s photos.
