73.3 km – 12H28′
16,000 km in 217 days, 17 hours and 13 minutes.

14 days, 23 hours and 45 minutes between 15,000 and 16,000 km, the longest thousand of the whole crossing.

100% urban environment, 100% rain and humidity

The day wasn’t too bad, however!

Serge is lucky, it started to rain just as he left in the morning.  He put on his rain gear but almost immediately started sweating so much that he took it right off.  In spite of having applied anti-chaffing cream throughout the day, chaffing increased and the skin on the inside of his thighs was red.  But Serge went on, slowly but surely towards the 16,000 kilometer mark.  We managed to find shelter in a garage.  The owner welcomed us for the grand event.  What kindness!

The day ended under a cloudburst.  The city of Kytakyushu, like a lot of Japanese cities, is very spread out. There are traffic lights every 20 meters because there are so many cross roads. All these intersections make it difficult to guide Serge and what risked happening did: Serge went left at a fork in the road and lost about 30 minutes.  With a temperature of 20° Celsius and soaked, Serge was paralyzed with cold.

“It was a shitty day.”  Those were the words of a tired runner at the end of the day. The worst of it all was that the GPS watch started acting up because of all the humidity and we couldn’t transfer its data to the computer.  With patience and using the hair dryer we got it to work an hour later.

At 20H30 everything has been put away and in 7 hours the alarm clock will go off.

Compared to what is going on in the world, these are small problems but there are days when relativity remains well hidden.
