D65 – 73.8Km
MONDAY, FEBRUARY 20
N41 49.216 E32 36.225 (Meydan) – N41 56.874 E33 08.337 (3km before Denizkonak)
73.8 km – 9H25′
We are going along the Black Sea on a small road unencumbered by vehicles and see quite a few women with baskets full of wood strapped to their backs and others who are taking one or two cows to graze. Cows and donkeys are left free and it isn’t unusual to see them in the middle of the raod. Serge even raced with some horses this morning. Once again his stride is alert and his face is relaxed. The land is still hilly and difficult. In Cide, Serge had some respite for about 8 kilometers of up and down hills as we went along a pebble beach. At kilometer 42, at a roundabout, Serge chose the wrong direction, which added 3 kilometers to this stage.
An aside concerning tea, which is more than just a custom in Turkey. It’s a way of life and a mark of hospitality. Wherever you stop you are offered steaming tea in a small glass (see today’s photos)
This evening we are innovating because it will be our first roadside camp. On the top of a cliff we have found an almost flat terrain which is firm enough to park the vehicles. Serge is delighted with the atmosphere of the camp. At 18H45 we are eating outside, the temperature is 8°C and the sky full of stars. The telephone rings, it’s Serge’s parents calling for news.
At 19H30 everyone goes to bed. It has been a good day.
Thanks go to Joël for today’s photos.
