J12 – 9/10/2001

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 10th / DAY 12

73Km in 9 hours and 12mn

Total covered : 861km

Start at an altitude of 4200m. The night was cold and waking up is hard for everybody. We’re freezing. Frost, then hoar frost makes the whole camp wet. Serge painfully gets up with a headache which will only go around midday.

The stage today: col at an altitude of 4300m, then down to Andahuaylas (2900), then up again to the little village of Champacoha (3200m) where we’ll sleep tonight.

When we get to Andahuaylas, Serge wants to stop because of pain in his right bullock, sciatic due to the running down. But, he pulls himself together and manages to finish the stage, walking the last thirteen kilometers.

The day ends in good spirits though, today is Favio’s birthday, our Brazilian driver in charge of the camp. Still by 8, everyone’s in bed, the race goes on.
