J24 – 9/22/2001

Saturday, September 22nd / Day 24.

Miles/day: 44.8     Total: 1096 miles

Daily average speed: 5.95/h

We’ve had some problems again. Some youngsters on a minibus have thrown projectiles at Serge’s face.

At the camp, we are surrounded by a crowd of more than 50 men. Insecurity is everywhere. We ask for the help of the police, they stay with us from 8.10 to 5 a.m so we can  sleep safely.

However, this last week in Peru won’t spoil the good memories of these Peruvian villagers that we’ve met in the mountains. We’ll remember these smiling faces on which curiosity and proudness could be read : proudness of welcoming “gringos” and mutual respect sealed by exchange of presents.

Serge has a hard time, on top of the physical difficulties, which he had underestimated, there are problems with the logistics to do with the communications. In spite of all this,we will arrive in LA PAZ on Monday evening so the more important is to hold the “ way”.
